Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) activity is designed to enhance healthcare professionals' knowledge and competence in the identification, assessment, management, and prevention of suicide among patients across different healthcare settings. Suicide remains a major public health concern and is often preventable through timely recognition of risk factors, comprehensive psychosocial assessment, and appropriate intervention. The session will review the epidemiology of suicide, risk and protective factors, warning signs, evidence-based suicide risk assessment tools, crisis intervention strategies, safety planning, and referral pathways. Participants will also discuss the legal and ethical considerations in suicide care and the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in improving patient outcomes.

Objectives

By the end of this CME activity, participants should be able to: Describe the epidemiology and burden of suicide and suicidal behaviour in clinical practice. Identify common risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs associated with suicidal ideation and behaviour. Conduct a structured suicide risk assessment using evidence-based approaches. Differentiate between low-, moderate-, and high-risk patients and determine appropriate management strategies. Develop individualized safety plans and implement immediate interventions for patients at risk of suicide. Describe appropriate referral pathways and multidisciplinary approaches for the management of suicidal patients. Discuss the ethical and legal considerations surrounding suicide risk assessment, confidentiality, and documentation. Apply effective communication skills when engaging patients and families experiencing suicidal crises.
