Description

Cardiology Training Schedule: 1. Introduction to ACS 2. Pathophysiology & Risk Factor Modification 3. Diagnosis of ACS: Bio markers vs. ECGs

Objectives

Introduction to Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) 1. Define Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) and describe its major clinical presentations. 2. Differentiate between ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and unstable angina. 3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of ACS and identify patients requiring urgent intervention. 4. Outline the initial assessment and immediate management of patients presenting with suspected ACS. 2. Pathophysiology and Risk Factor Modification 1. Explain the pathophysiology of ACS, including coronary atherosclerosis and plaque rupture. 2. Identify modifiable and non-modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. 3. Describe evidence-based strategies for cardiovascular risk reduction and lifestyle modification. 4. Discuss pharmacological interventions for secondary prevention of ACS and recurrent cardiovascular events. 3. Diagnosis of ACS: Biomarkers vs. ECGs 1. Interpret ECG findings associated with ACS, including ST-segment elevation, ST-segment depression, and T-wave abnormalities. 2. Explain the role of cardiac biomarkers, particularly high-sensitivity cardiac troponin, in diagnosing myocardial infarction. 3. Differentiate between the diagnostic value and limitations of ECGs and cardiac biomarkers. 4. Apply an integrated diagnostic approach using clinical assessment, serial ECGs, and serial cardiac troponin measurements. 5. Recognize the need for immediate management of suspected STEMI without waiting for cardiac biomarker results.
